SARS-CoV-2 detection in saliva using bead-beating homogenization and an RT-PCR kit
In infectious disease research, the use of saliva sampling as a less invasive and more comfortable method of detection is attractive to many labs. In this application note, the Omni Bead Ruptor Elite bead mill homogenizer is highlighted for its effectiveness in homogenizing saliva samples for PCR-based SARS-CoV-2 detection. This study found 100% agreement in detecting SARS-CoV-2 from saliva in samples with recently confirmed infections, as detected by standard nasopharyngeal swab PCR methods. The homogenization step is a crucial consideration within this workflow process.
